כמה כתבים יש בספרייה? התשובה תלויה במה שסופרים, וההפרש גדול מספיק כדי להטעות:

התאריך מתחת לכל אסופה הוא המועד שבו ACIP עדכנה לאחרונה את הקטלוג והתרגום שלה, כך שהסונגבום כאן עדכני בשמונה חודשים מהקנג'ור. שלושת קובצי השורש הם קטלוג טוהוקו, סריקת TBRC ופתק עבודה. חיבורי הקנג'ור נספרים לפי מספרי טוהוקו נפרדים שברשותנו, כולל 265 קבצי לאסה לאחר מיפוי; הטנג'ור אף הוא לפי טוהוקו; הסונגבום לפי מזהה ACIP מלא, כי אין לו מספור קאנוני.

סונגבום

2,679 חיבורים ב־35 מדורי נושא. כאן אין מול מה להשוות, ולא במקרה: הקנג'ור והטנג'ור הם קאנון סגור עם מספור מוסכם, והסונגבום הוא קטגוריה פתוחה — כל אוסף כתבים של כל מורה טיבטי לאורך אלף שנה. אין לו «מספר רשמי» שאפשר להעמיד מולו אחוז.

הסונגבום המלא נאמד בעשרות אלפי חיבורים, כך ש־2,679 הוא מבחר — אך מבחר ממוקד: כל 67 הקבצים של רֶנדאווה, הפירושים של גיאלצאב וקֶדרוּפּ, פאבונגקה, והמילון הטיבטי־טיבטי הגדול. ביחס לעבודת התרגום והקטלוג המתנהלת בפועל, הכיסוי מספיק.

איך זה חושב

• הפרדת שלוש האסופות — לפי שמות התיקיות ברמה העליונה: מספר עם נקודה (1.–13.) הוא קנג'ור, ומאשר את זה 13. DKAR CHAG_Native Catalog to the Kangyur; שתי ספרות בלי נקודה (01–16) הוא טנג'ור; שם נושא באותיות גדולות הוא סונגבום.
• חיבור מול קובץ — והכלל שונה בין האסופות. בקנג'ור ובטנג'ור חיבור הוא המספר שלו, כי המספור שם הוא טוהוקו: KL00363-1 וKL00363-2 הם שני קבצים של טקסט אחד, ולכן PHAL CHEN הוא חיבור אחד על פני 52 קבצים. בסונגבום חיבור הוא המזהה המלא, כי ACIP משתמשת בסיומות אותיות לחיבורים נפרדים בתוך סדרה — S05977E64 וS05977E65 הם שני סאדהאנות שונות, לא חיבור אחד.

Three answers to one question

How many texts does the library hold? It depends what is counted, and the spread is wide enough to mislead:

The date under each collection is when ACIP last updated its cataloguing and translation of that collection, so the Sungbum here is eight months fresher than the Kangyur. The three root files are the Tohoku catalogue, a TBRC scan and a working note. Kangyur works are counted as distinct Tohoku numbers held, which includes the 265 Lhasa-edition files once mapped; Tengyur likewise by Tohoku number; Sungbum by full ACIP identifier, since it has no canonical numbering.

Tengyur — against the Tohoku catalogue

Compared against Toh 1109–4569. Here the picture is entirely different:

Sungbum

2,679 works across 35 subject sections. Here there is nothing to compare against, and not by accident: the Kangyur and the Tengyur are a closed canon with an agreed numbering, whereas the Sungbum is an open category — the collected writings of every Tibetan master across a thousand years. It has no “official number” against which a percentage could be set.

The full Sungbum is reckoned in the tens of thousands of works, so 2,679 is a selection — but a focused one: all 67 of Rendawa's files, the commentaries of Gyaltsab and Kedrup, Pabongka, and the great Tibetan-Tibetan dictionary. Against the translation and cataloguing work actually under way, the coverage is sufficient.

Holdings by subject section

35 sections, ordered by size; the bar is proportional to the largest. Every row keeps opening — section, sub-section, author — down to the individual texts, each shown with its ACIP identifier, its Tibetan title and ACIP's English rendering. Long names are truncated on screen; hovering shows the full name.

When their authors lived

By the century in which the author was born. Two charts, because they answer two questions. The collection is not spread evenly across a thousand years.

How many filings those people account for

The same people, counted by what they wrote. The two shapes differ: the 14th century holds 7 people and 427 filings — Tsongkapa and his students — while the 19th holds 19 people and 248 filings. Ngulchu Dharma Bhadra alone accounts for 575 of the 18th.

Before any figure above can be trusted, each of the 9,040 files on disk has to fall into exactly one bucket and the buckets have to sum to the total. They do.

How this was counted

• Separating the three collections — by the top-level folder names: a number with a dot (1.–13.) is Kangyur, confirmed by 13. DKAR CHAG_Native Catalog to the Kangyur; two digits without a dot (01–16) is Tengyur; an all-capitals subject name is Sungbum.
• Work versus file — and the rule differs by collection. In the Kangyur and the Tengyur a work is its numeric identity, because that numbering is Tohoku: KL00363-1 and KL00363-2 are two files of one text, which is why PHAL CHEN is a single work spread over 52 files. In the Sungbum a work is the full identifier, because ACIP uses letter suffixes for separate works within a series — S05977E64 and S05977E65 are different sadhanas, not one work.
• The official numbers — from the table of divisions in the Tohoku catalogue held in the library, in the file TOHOKU KANGYUR index.txt. Where that scan is damaged — Medicine and Fine Arts — the ranges were completed from a named external source and cross-checked against the holdings.
